Green Product Award 2024, Qwarzo shines in the Packaging category

Brescia. The Green Product Award 2024 celebrated the most sustainable innovations in Berlin on 30 April with the participation of 1500 professionals from 60 countries. Qwarzo, an Italian company based in Rovato (Brescia) that develops innovative high-tech materials, won in the Packaging category and this award underlines its commitment to sustainable solutions that enable product circularity.

Qwarzo® is a technology based on silica, one of the most naturally occurring materials, which offers a plastic- and microplastic-free coating alternative. Specifically, Qwarzo® coats paper fibres by creating a barrier, a natural reinforcement, increasing their strength and performance. The coated paper, with an imperceptible, plastic-free barrier-layer, is therefore more robust, resistant to grease, water and heat; with this process, the recyclability and compostability of the substrate is not altered in any way and this allows products with Qwarzo® to be recycled as paper or disposed of in organic waste.

Qwarzo® technology is the result of intuition combined with technical expertise and a love of research. The different applications of this coating make it an extremely flexible material that can be adapted to different applications; in the food sector: straws, ice cream spoons, coffee stirrers, plates, glasses; in packaging, containers, boxes and much more.

The official jury of the award recognised the revolutionary impact of Qwarzo®, stating: ‘Qwarzo offers a plastic-free coating alternative that can be applied to different materials, functionalising them without altering their recyclability and compostability – a true revolution for the packaging industry.’

Emiliano Caradonna, CEO of Qwarzo, expressed gratitude for the award: ‘This win confirms our mission as pioneers in sustainable packaging. We will continue to expand the boundaries of innovation for a true circular economy.’

Luca Panzeri, Founder and Head of Research at Qwarzo, added: ‘The recognition highlights the importance of advanced solutions that meet regulatory and environmental requirements without sacrificing quality or functionality.’

The accolades are not slow in coming. This month alone, Qwarzo® is among the finalists for the Tocco Award in the FUTURE VISIONARY MATERIAL category and received a special mention as Innovative Material at Avantgarde 2024. This interest in technology is not lacking even among the big Brands and in the Packaging industry.

In addition to projects under development, Qwarzo has offered its technology for the launch of various products using its proprietary technology. For example, in recent months Flo Group launched Alpha®, a sustainable tableware set; Alcas presented its thermoformed PAP paper ice cream spoon; and Gondola Packaging won the Innovation Award with its Qwarzo® barrier-coated paper ice cream cup.
