Berlin. At InnoTrans 2026, Lucchini RS Group signed a multi-year framework agreement with GATX Rail Europe, reinforcing the partnership between the two companies in the European rail freight market. GATX Rail Europe is among the largest operators in the sector, with a fleet of over 36,500 freight wagons, and operates in more than 20 countries. The products covered by the agreement will be manufactured mainly by Lucchini Poland, the Group’s subsidiary specializing in the production of wheels and wheelsets.
Innovation and Predictive Maintenance: Smartset® Vibe Technology
At InnoTrans, Lucchini RS Group also showcased its digital wheelset-monitoring solutions, a key element of modern predictive-maintenance strategies for railway systems. The stand featured a historic wheelset manufactured in Lovere in the early 1900s, displayed alongside Smartset® Vibe, the latest evolution of the Smartset® platform. The system is designed to detect potential anomalies at an early stage and provide operators with actionable data to plan targeted maintenance activities.
Smartset® Vibe is already in use in several operational contexts: the Brescia automatic metro, the T1 Bergamo–Albino tram line operated by TEB, and TiB passenger trains in Sweden.
“The railway sector is moving toward maintenance models that rely increasingly on data and continuous monitoring of operating conditions,” explains Riccardo Pasinetti, Commercial Director of the Railway Division at Lucchini RS Group.
“Smartset® Vibe was created to meet this need, offering reliable, timely information on vehicle performance. Access to objective data allows operators to plan maintenance more effectively, improving fleet availability, operational efficiency, and service safety.”
International Projects: From Egypt to India
Among the projects presented in Berlin is the supply of wheelsets to Siemens Mobility for Velaro high-speed trains destined for Egypt’s new high-speed rail network, a strategic infrastructure project for the country’s mobility development.
In Asia, Lucchini RS Group has also signed a partnership with Jupiter Wagons to establish an industrial platform in India dedicated to the production of railway wheels, axles, and wheelsets. The initiative combines Lucchini RS’s technological and industrial expertise with the manufacturing and commercial presence of its Indian partner, opening up new growth opportunities in one of the world’s most dynamic railway markets.
A Group with a Growing Global Presence
With more than 2,000 employees and an established presence across Europe and Asia, Lucchini RS Group continues to pursue a growth strategy based on innovation, sustainability, and international expansion.
The agreement with GATX Rail Europe marks another step forward in strengthening the Group’s position in the European railway sector, reinforcing Lovere’s role as a key industrial and technological hub.
