Valsabbia. A tragic accident took place during the 49th Rally 1000 Miglia, forcing organizers to halt the event after a competing car left the road and fatally struck a spectator.
The incident happened between Casto and Bione in the early afternoon of 5 September, during the fourth stage of the rally. Car no. 42 — a Skoda Fabia driven by Alessandro Zorzi with co‑driver Fabio Berisonzi — went off the road on a right‑hand hairpin just after the “end of special stage” point, hitting Francesco De Pasquale, 63, a resident of Caselle Torinese.
Race control immediately suspended all starts for the special stage and dispatched emergency services. Despite the rapid intervention and attempts to provide assistance, the man died instantly.
Given the seriousness of the incident, the organizers — in agreement with the Federation, authorities and all competent bodies — decided to interrupt the event.
