Sailing: Emilia Salvatore and Pietro Rizzi win gold at the 29er European Championships
Italian triumph in the Czech Republic. The mixed crew from Canottieri Garda Salò claims the continental title. Third place for Emma De Bernardi and Pietro Cunegatti of Associazione Velica Alto Lario.

Lipno (Czech Rep.). From world silver to European gold in just one month, Emilia Salvatore and Pietro Rizzi won the mixed title at the 2026 29er European Championships in Lipno, Czech Republic.
The crew from Canottieri Garda Salò finished ahead of the Polish team Weronika Grala and Pascal Kuzmicki (Nauticus YC Olsztyn), placing seventh overall and first among Italians.
On the third step of the mixed podium was another Italian boat, with Emma De Bernardi and Pietro Cunegatti of Associazione Velica Alto Lario.
For Emilia Salvatore, in her first season sailing with Rizzi, this is her first European title and her third international medal, after the 2025 world bronze with Pietro Zandri and the 2026 world silver won with Rizzi.
“This was a very tough championship due to extremely tricky wind conditions. We sailed only a few races in very shifting, patchy wind, so nothing was certain, but we gave our best and managed to deliver the result. There are no words to describe the happiness we feel right now,” said an emotional Emilia Salvatore.
For Pietro Rizzi it is a major confirmation, after last year’s titles at the Worlds in Porto and the European in Riva del Garda alongside Giulia Bartolozzi. The Garda-born sailor earns his fifth international medal, a path that began with the 2024 world bronze.
From 1 to 8 August, the European Championship gathered 182 crews from 27 countries in the Czech Republic, also featuring non-European delegations from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Oman, Singapore and the United States.
“It was a championship with very little wind, only 4 races sailed out of the 18 scheduled, and long, exhausting waits that made concentration difficult. The racecourse was treacherous, full of wind holes and tricky, unpredictable shifts, but Pietro and Emilia read those marginal breezes superbly. After world silver comes European gold for two sailors who are now true medal collectors,” commented coach Chicco Fonda.
