Farewell to Giacomo Andrico, internationally renowned director and set designer from Brescia
The 62-year-old master from Borgo San Giacomo has died. He signed productions at the most important Italian and European theaters and directed the Santa Crus of Cerveno.

Brescia. The world of Brescia culture loses one of its most respected figures.
Giacomo Andrico, a director and set designer originally from Motella in Borgo San Giacomo, has died at 62, felled by an illness diagnosed a few months ago. He passed away at the hospice in Orzinuovi, where he had been hospitalized. The funeral will be held on Monday, July 20 at 4 p.m. in Borgo San Giacomo, and a vigil is scheduled for Sunday evening at the family home.
A graduate of the Brera Academy, Andrico had built an international career, working with some of the most important Italian and European theaters, from Teatro alla Scala in Milan to the Piccolo Teatro, including the Teatro Regio in Turin, the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, the Petruzzelli in Bari, and numerous foreign stages such as the Teatro Real in Madrid, Bilbao, Seville and leading theaters in Seoul.
A refined set designer and versatile director, he collaborated with major theater figures like Luca Ronconi and Simone Cristicchi, signing, among others, the sets for the show “Franciscus, the madman who spoke to the birds”. His works continue to live on in productions of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, currently on stage in Sofia.
Alongside his artistic activity he devoted much time to teaching, as a lecturer at the Venice Architecture University, the Accademia Santa Giulia in Brescia, and the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan.
Despite international success, Andrico never severed ties with the Brescia area. He willingly collaborated with local theater realities and directed two editions of the Santa Crus of Cerveno, in 2012 and 2024, helping to enhance one of the most important popular Passion representations.
Among his recent works is a documentary dedicated to Liliana Betti, longtime collaborator of Federico Fellini, produced with the Willyco association. Only a few days ago he married his partner Nicoletta Cancelli in the hospital.
Reserved and approachable by nature, he leaves the memory of an artist of great sensitivity, able to combine creative rigor, deep culture and humanity. A legacy that will live on in his productions, set designs, documentaries and the many people fortunate enough to have worked with him.
